All By My Self
(Alex Hunter)

You said you love me
I felt your breath
Warm on my skin
As cold as death
Cause I’m not here
I’m somewhere else
Im lying next to me
All by my self

When we got married
Under a tree
I saw the birds
Fly high so free
I said I do
But thats someone else
Im standing next to me
All by my self

When the lord in heaven made me
Did he forget about my heart
How can I keep on going
When I don’t know where to start

But I’ll be happy
Holding my hand
Down hidden roads
And lonely lands
And when I die
Thats someone else
Im lying next to me
All by my self

Do It All Over Again
(Alex Hunter)

You never knew a thing about me
When was it that you began to doubt me
Those never ending nights spent
Wondering where the time went
And if I ever noticed what that look inside your eyes meant
When I said lets give it one more try
And its a shame but stop your sighing
I won’t blame you if you try and
Play the game, we’ll say each other’s name
And do it all over again

That guy with you was really on it
He held your hair back to avoid the vomit
You heard me in the hallway
You said that’s what they all say
Just put me in a song so I can be the girl from Galway
And make sure that you fill it full of lies
And its a shame but stop your sighing
I won’t blame you if you try and
Play the game, we’ll say each other’s name
And do it all over again

You slapped me when I tried to touch you
Right after I said I really loved you
You said if I still want to know her
Then why don’t I just go there
You said her name so many times
It slipped right out of nowhere
We laid there looking at the sky
And its a shame but stop your sighing
I won’t blame you if you try and
Play the game, we’ll say each other’s name
And do it all over again

(Her) “You went out drinking and you left me on my own
And then I pressed the home screen on your phone
It was a message with no name
It said lets meet again”
(Both) We had each others number it was just like way back when
You asked if I could see you one more time
And its a shame but stop your sighing
I won’t blame you if you try and
Play the game, we’ll say each other’s name
And do it all over again

Friday by the Sea
(Alex Hunter)

The school kids wait in line as far as I can see
Outside the one shop around that doesn’t check for ID
Im sitting on the wall and drinking mushroom tea
And soon I’ll head out for the arcade
The lads on the pull go over lines in the loo
The women are dressed to kill and I’m trying to guess who
And though my demons turn to angels in an hour or two
Ill be glad that I’m still carrying my blade
And for now it doesn’t really matter who I’m gonna be
Its just another Friday by the sea

I make a little money on the fruit machine
On the electric chair is where the children scream
Thats when I realise life is nothing but a dream
And put my feet into the sea and feel the foam
I meet my baby on the boardwalk with a bottle of plonk
We stumble over stones I’m feeling just like a monk
We try and get it on the cars start to honk
I think its time we head on home
And for now it doesn’t really matter who I’m gonna be
Its just another Friday by the sea

My baby and me we start to wander on back
Come across some Bet Fred bandits and they’re asking for tax
Baby gets out of dodge cos they’re on the attack
They tell me that she isn’t from around here
I ask them exactly where they think she’s from
And I get out my knife and then they wave me on
Try and find my baby but she’s long gone
And then she rings to say “lets meet up at the crown dear”
And for now it doesn’t really matter who I’m gonna be
Its just another Friday by the sea

The Warlocks they patrol the bar with fingers of gold
And for all the bar brawl tales and the stories they told
After all these years they just turned out to be old
I think the feeling I have is pity
We’re in the corner with the rockers feeling kind of stoned
Spill our beers and sing You Shook Me All Night Long
It’s Friday and their cards are full of student loans
And tomorrow they’ll be heading for the city
And for now it doesn’t really matter who I’m gonna be
Its just another Friday by the sea

My baby tells me bluntly I still smell like fish
I said what do you expect after a twelve hour shift
We look around, the conversation starts to drift
And she talks about the letters her daddy sends
He’s an old man, used to feed the pigeons crumbs of bread
And now lives in a home, refuses to be fed
And the pigeons by the window watch him in his bed
Its good to know that they’re still friends
And for now it doesn’t really matter who I’m gonna be
Its just another Friday by the sea

If We Don’t Say Goodbye
(Alex Hunter)

We met with some friends though we already shared
A couple of smiles and hellos here and there
You knew that I sang a few songs around town
And we spoke of the things that were going around
You asked was I playing somewhere you could come to
And it was as clear as you giving your number
Wasn’t sure if you knew whether I had another
Pretended I never had heard of your lover

And thats when we noticed that no one was talking
Just looking right at us, their faces so awkward
For we’d been away in a garden of flowers
We looked at the time we’d been talking for hours
I took a cab home got back to my place
And I fell on my bed and I thought of your face
And in came my sweetheart, asked how was my day
And I said it was fine and then I turned away

You came to the show and I told you the truth
You laughed and you told me you’d thought of me too
We spoke about home and then speaking in Spanish
We both said te quiero and watched the words vanish
And in came our sweethearts, we greeted and kissed
And all that we shared sailed into the mist
My eyes fell on yours as we talked round the table
I reached for my bottle and scratched off the label

And later we managed to lose them a while
And agreed it was best if we live in denial
If we don’t break their hearts they won’t have to be mended
We won’t say goodbye because nothing had ended
But when I’m alone in my daydreams I feel
All the passion of life and its just you and me
And once in a while I think back to a love
That was over before it had even begun

I Wish There Were A Devil To Blame
(Alex Hunter)

Bird fly high over chaos and doom
Gunfire underneath a peaceful moon
Momma cry murder on her baby’s tomb
Down in the wild where the roses bloom

Things buy money and money buys things
She travels over oceans on a butterfly’s wing
You can watch her dance you can hear her sing
She haunts the dreams of beggars and kings

I wish there were a devil to blame
I wish there were a devil to blame
Call the lord I only hear my name
I wish there were a devil to blame

White Columbia with her flaming torch
Marching out west from a seven year war
Playing Yankee Doodle on a buffalo horn
In the burning valleys where heaven was born

Mercy brought them from a pagan land
Taught their souls how to understand
If they’d put together their shackled hands
They’d be forgiven by the son of man

I wish there were a devil to blame
I wish there were a devil to blame
Call the lord I only hear my name
I wish there were a devil to blame

Out with the iron ghosts riding the plains
Black flags rising over shimmering blades
Women and children in a house of chains
The words of a prophet out a mouth of flames

Man learned how to trap and trick and trade
Trapped a woman then he tricked her into trading her name
Taught her all the virtues of being his slave
And thats how civilisation is made

I wish there were a devil to blame
I wish there were a devil to blame
Call the lord I only hear my name
I wish there were a devil to blame

Tonight, Tomorrow
(Alex Hunter)

Gather your flowers the sun shines bright
Tomorrow it will rain
Find true love while living young
The day won’t come again
Your face was bright as no one else
The sun had shone upon
Tonight, tomorrow and I’ll wake up
And find that you were gone

Your truth it shines just like a star
This sailor’s bound to find
And I upon the crashing waves
Of wild horses ride
Return to kiss you on the lips
Or anywhere you want
Tonight, tomorrow and I’ll wake up
And find that you were gone

I guess you know there’s someone else
Still feels kind of new
And all the things I do for her
I wish I did for you
And if you say it isn’t true
I never sang this song
Tonight, tomorrow and I’ll wake up
And find that you were gone

Wild Bill Hickok
(Alex Hunter)

Three more drinks and one for the road
The night is young and I ain’t that old
The past’s long gone so I’ve been told
And a dead man’s hand is what the future holds

I was raised by dogs in a poor boy’s home
Where the bricks are made of graveyard stone
Drifted on down to the mines of South Dakota
Where a fellow’s eyes shine with a vision of gold

Took my pan and it struck up dry
Flies just buzzing all around my eyes
I wanted my piece of American pie
But Uncle Sam’s promise was a pack of lies

I’ve always been a gambling man
A pirate of the prairies in the rambling lands
If I can’t win a game against an honest man
I’ll take that gold right out of his hands

Wild Bill Hickok was a man to fear
He’d slashed the throat of a cinnamon bear
In Deadwood Wild Bill won his share
Its only right that I take it there

Bet my money in a poker game
Folded in the second, not a penny to my name
Wild Bill took pity and he bought me a dame
And I walked right out of there full of shame

Wild Bill Hickok with his back to the door
I pulled out a pistol with a cavalry draw
The eights and the aces hit the floor
He got it bad, I just wanted it more

They strung me up to a branch of oak
And tied my neck with a twenty inch rope
The rope it itched around my throat
So I checked out quick and I hit the road

You’ll Know How I Feel
(Alex Hunter)

I saw her there with chestnut hair
I thought I’d fall right off my chair
The flesh is weak I touched her cheek
There was no time for waiting
It wasn’t long I wasn’t strong
I had to see her right or wrong
Now I think its best I head out west
The wilderness awaiting
The lights in town were shutting down
You asked me if id stick around
I said you know I gotta go
So why so melancholy
She cried please stay don’t go away
Just wait until the break of day
Our love was true it was all you knew
And for that I’m truly sorry

But don’t break your heart for someone like me
Break your heart for real
And if you break your heart for someone you love
You’ll know how it feels

I row my boat the river flows
And drifts to where god only knows
My enemies just memories
And shadows on the water
There’s old affairs and lovers there
And they hang on my every word
But I’m a king with a crown of tin
Not feeling like I ought to
There’s song and dance and cards from France
That speak of fortune and romance
And every card spoke to a heart
That changed with every hour
The wandering fool could never chose
A world made of so many rules
The king and queen were never seen
Since moving to the tower

Cause they gave their hearts to someone they love
They gave their hearts for real
And they break their hearts for someone they love
They know how it feels

She came to me so playfully
And said do what you want with me
Her hands moved slow the darkness glowed
And we were carried under
The room grew bright I felt the biting
Coldness of the morning light
The crimson rose leaves froze beneath
The howling and the thunder
And then I bled the words you said
When lying with me on the bed
Its plain to see your heart was free
And I was just a coward
You told me how forever abounds
With a million moments just like now
And when you kiss me just like this
There’s no one who can doubt it

Cause you gave your heart to someone you love
You gave your heart for real
And you break your heart for someone you love
You know how it feels

I drown my fears with three more beers
That make up for my lack of tears
They follow me won’t let me be
From what am I escaping
The furthest light is out of sight
Only I can see the moon tonight
I’m crying out without a doubt
Because my heart is breaking
A girl in brown just turned me down
And the bar around me is spinning round
And all I see is you and me
So faithful to the future
I see my fate I can’t escape
Ill walk with you to traitors gate
And if you said to me we were meant to be
Well how could I refute you

Cause you gave your heart to someone like me
You gave your heart for real
And you break your heart for someone you love
I know how it feels
